Dye Penetrant Testing
The paint penetrant test, also known as liquid penetrant inspection, is the most reliable method to find surface defects and discontinuities, especially on all non-porous materials. This method is widely used for testing non-magnetic materials.
In the PT method, a liquid / dye penetrant is applied to the surface of the product for a predetermined time determined by codes, standards or specifications, then the excess penetrant is removed from the surface. Then the surface is dried and a developer is applied on it. The penetrant that remains in discontinuity is absorbed by the developer to indicate the presence, location, size and nature of the discontinuity. The penetrants used are either visible dye penetrant or fluorescent dye penetrant. The presence of visible dye indications is done under white light, while the examination of the indications with fluorescent dye penetrant is done under high intensity ultraviolet (or black) light under dark conditions.
