Magnetic Particle Testing
Magnetic particle testing is a method for detecting cracks and other discontinuities on the surface and surface of ferro-magnetic materials. Detection sensitivity is maximum at the surface and increased sub-surface imperfections decrease rapidly with depth. The detection of defects is due to the fact that when a material is magnetized, the discontinuities extending across the magnetization direction cause the magnetic flux lines to deteriorate and a leakage area forms on or above the surface. This magnetically trapped particles collection outlines the effects and shows the location, shape and extent of discontinuities. The direction and strength of the magnetic field, the magnetic character of the part, the location and direction of the discontinuities, and the type of magnetic powder applied affect the formation of the dust pattern, and therefore the exact location of the defect is specified.
